Shortly after his father Edgar’s death, Tel Aviv-based filmmaker Bobby Lax visits his native England and discovers a suitcase full of photos and personal letters Edgar, often difficult and distant, had hidden about his Kindertransport experience and his Berliner parents who perished in the Holocaust. Bobby turns to Manuel, his German-born childhood friend, to translate the correspondence. Manuel, who hails from a family steeped in cinematic history (his aunt was married to Stanley Kubrick, and his father’s uncle was the infamous Nazi filmmaker Veit Harlan), accompanies Bobby to Berlin to find the missing pieces of their respective family stories –a task that forces them to look anew at their lifelong bond, this time not only as two British childhood friends, but also as a German and a Jew.
