1918 Flu

We will hear the story of the Burinescu family, who lived in the museum’s historic tenement building in the 1910s and 20s. While living in 97 Orchard street and running a business across the street, the Burinescus experienced the flu season of 1918-1919, which became the deadliest pandemic in human history so far. On this program we will explore what made the flu of 1918 so devastating and how New York City responded to this global crisis.

The program will also examine why the pandemic was largely forgotten or overlooked by historians, and the lessons the flu of 1918 might hold for our current moment. Most importantly, we will focus on the way this event is remembered and memorialized by the Burinescu family over the generations.
