A Midsummer Music Fest: EMPOWERING WOMEN’S VOICES

100 years ago, the 19th amendment to the US Constitution was ratified giving women the right to vote. ZOOM in with Music at Am Shalom and our cantors for a series of events in celebration of women’s voices!

Join us for a CONVERSATION with Cantor Barbara J. Ostfeld, the first ordained woman cantor in Jewish history, Chicago native, and author of Catbird: The Ballad of Barbi Prim (memoir).

"Decades ago, Barbara planted her roots in the soil of a calling that was not open to women. Her passion, her bravery and yes, her chutzpah allowed the women that followed to carve our initials in the trunk of our profession. And like the branches, fruit and leaves of a tree, her place in our history will continue to enrich the Judaism that we all celebrate. Barbara's voice gave a place to ours and quite literally changed the way that our people heard our sacred music." She is "the Nachshon, the Miriam, the Devorah of the American Cantorate." (Claire Franco, President of the American Conference of Cantors)
