Sharon Morton is beginning her
31st year as Director of
Religious Education at Am
Shalom. She is responsible for
the total educational
programming for the
congregation. Because of her
great interest in social action,
the social action committee and
the education committee do
certain projects in tandem and
the program becomes more
holistic. Sharon's interest in
social action led her to
accompany 50 students to Poland
and Israel, to go to the former
Soviet Union on two occasions to
meet with Jews, to work with
interfaith groups, and teach in
interfaith settings. She also
traveled to Cuba on humanitarian
missions.
She earned her Masters Degree in
Jewish Education from Spertus
College of Judaica in Chicago.
She spent a year studying in
Israel in the Melton Sr.
Education Program. Sharon has
been a member of National
Association of Temple Educators
(NATE) for almost 30 years and
has held positions ranging from
social action chair, to various
vice president positions, and
finally became the President of the
organization in 1998-2000.
Sharon is currently on the
Rabbinic Pension Board, The
Avenue of the Righteous Advisory
Board, the NATE Leadership
Board, and is the founder of SoJuRN
(Social Justice Religious
Resource Network).
Sharon is working on a regional
project called "One Generation
Teaches Another / Grandparents
for Social Justice". She hopes
that grandparents will teach
their grandchildren that we all
have a mission to make the world
a better place.
