What is WE CARE?
We Care is an organization at Am Shalom dedicated to helping members of our Am Shalom community during times of need.
Who are WE CARE volunteers?
Our volunteers are as varied as our congregation. Most are adults. However, some activities are perfect for a parent and young or teenage child to do together.
What does WE CARE do?
On an as needed basis, we provide support for our Am Shalom community in any areas in which they may need help. Typically, we receive a request from the congregant, a family member, or from our senior staff. Currently, our volunteers are involved in several activities: accompanying a congregant to the grocery store; preparing meals for a family; and visiting a congregant recovering from surgery. On a monthly basis, volunteers prepare and deliver Shabbat Baskets for our congregants. These bags are delivered to congregants who are ill or have had a death in the family.
The time commitment varies by activity; however all involve a minimal amount of time and are flexible to fit your schedule. When we need a home visit or a meal, it is typically a one time event. The commitment for ongoing grocery store visits is part of a rotation and is usually once every 4 to 6 weeks, scheduled at the volunteer’s convenience. There are no meetings, our contacts are typically made by email (or phone if you prefer) and the volunteer work is done independently. If you are willing to be part of our volunteer database and open to be contacted when these needs arise, please contact Barby Salk at This email address is being protected from spambots. The committee meets one Friday morning a month (usually the 2nd Friday) to pack bags, which takes about 1/2 hour. Bags can then be delivered at your convenience during the day. This is meaningful involvement without a big time commitment. You can come whatever months you are available. If you are interested in learning more about Shabbat Basket Committee or want to participate, send your email address to This email address is being protected from spambots. Why WE CARE?
Our program is small and growing. It is pretty simple though, our volunteers just enjoy being able to help someone else. It doesn’t take much time, is flexible and personally gratifying. Some of our volunteers have formed friendships with people they would have never known. And, if the situation ever arises where you or someone you know, could use the help of WE CARE volunteers, please get in touch with one of us.
What are the next steps?
So, if you are willing to be part of our WE CARE database and are open to being contacted, please email us. We hope to hear from you.
Thanks for your support.
