The weekly Shabbat Shalom comments on the weekly Torah portion, as well as giving a quick calendar run-down of any special events and listing the week's Yahrzeits. It is available online here.
Shabbat, the Sabbath, is the perfect antidote for families in today's hectic society. Our Shabbat services are uplifting, enriching experiences to enjoy with other families and our community. Join us for this wonderful way to end your week. From September-June, our services generally follow the schedule below. Please make sure to click over to our calendar for details and specific dates.
Regular Shabbat Services are held the 1st & 4th Friday of the month at 6:30 p.m. These Services run approximately 60 minutes, and make use of Mishkan Tefillah, the new Reform prayer book. They are followed by an Oneg Shabbat, a brief reception and an opportunity to meet and greet!
Our Musical Shabbat Service with Adam Kahan and Kavanah is usually the 2nd Friday of the month at 6:30 p.m. This unique and uplifting service is followed by our Shabbat Club dinner, a regular monthly meal. Sign up for the whole year and mark your calendars to spend Shabbat with us. All ages can enjoy this evening of musical worship. (You can sign up for the Shabbat Club dinners here or by calling 847-835-4800. It's a great way to make Shabbat services and dinner a regular part of your month!)
Family Shabbat Service is the 3rd Friday of the month* at 6:30 p.m. All ages are welcome at our Family Shabbat Service, which is especially geared toward families with Religious School-age children. The music is lively, the story-telling engaging, and the service full of joy for all. We also celebrate Birthday Blessings and invite various grade levels to lead parts of the service at different times. Family Services are approximately 45-50 minutes long followed by an Oneg Shabbat, a brief reception and an opportunity to meet and greet.
Tot Shabbat takes place the 1st Friday of the month** at 5:15 p.m. Tot Shabbat is an abbreviated service aimed at families with children ages 0-6. Tot Shabbat is approximately 45 minutes long, and followed by challah and juice. Watch the Am Shalom calendar for special Tot Shabbat events.
Our Shabbat Morning Library Minyan and Torah Study takes place every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m., fifty-two weeks a year. In our beautiful Am Shalom Library, we engage in a prayer service followed by study of the week’s Torah portion. No special level of Torah expertise is required to participate fully in this comfortably collegial session spent discussing the ins and outs of Torah.
Our services are accompanied by the weekly Shabbat Shalom, a short bulletin that, among other things, outlines the weekly Torah portion and lists Shloshim and Yahrzeit.
The Almost-Daily Minyan takes place at 5:45 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays during the school months, and runs for approximately 15 minutes. This quiet and intimate service, held in the serene worship space of the Rosenfeld Chapel, is the perfect setting to remember a Yahrzeit, to pray for healing, and to calm and refresh your soul.
The summer months bring special Shabbat Services, including:
Shabbat at the Beach, held on specific Fridays (see the calendar for details) at 5:15 p.m.
Outdoor Service in our beautiful Perlmutter Courtyard on Fridays at 6:30 p.m.
Annual Shabbat at Wrigley - Once a year, a group from Am Shalom brings in Shabbat while cheering on the Cubs at Wrigley Field. A good time (and some challah) is had by all! See the June KOL for details.
